In September 2006 South Dublin County Council opened Ireland’s first concrete skatepark in Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan. A large demand for skateboard facilities was identified in this area and a process of consultation was started by the Parks Department with local people, youth groups and representatives of Lucan Skateboard Club.

It was decided to opt for a concrete skatepark. This had three main advantages over the modular skating equipment. Firstly it was the preferred option of all of the skateboarders we consulted because of the smooth seamless riding surface. Secondly , although similarly priced, concrete skateparks are far more durable and require much less maintenance than modular skateboarding equipment. Finally concrete skateparks are much quieter than modular equipment which is especially important when considering a skatepark close to residential areas.
The final result is a ‘plaza style’ skatepark consisting of interlinked mini ramps, hips, ledges, different height platforms and transitions. This is suitable for both learners and experienced skaters alike and gives an excellent flow and a variety of skating lines. There is also floodlighting and cctv in operation so the park will be used late into the evening.
Since the skatepark opened there has been a great reaction from skateboarders, parents and local people in the area. User numbers have continued to grow on a weekly basis. As well as locals we have had skaters travelling from all around Ireland and Northern Ireland. Recent media publicity and rave reviews by skaters on the internet have greatly contributed to this.
The finished facility is viewed as a major success for the Parks Department. The skatepark is providing a much needed facility for young people in the area. It gets the skaters off the streets and gives them a state of the art facility to pursue their sport. The skateboarders in turn have brought extra colour and life to Griffeen Valley Park as well as a sense of fun and are a very welcome addition to the many people who enjoy our parks.
