South Dublin County Council is committed to the protection and sustainable development of its physical and natural amenities, to promote access and to maximise their recreational value while protecting the County’s environmental assets.
The parks, open spaces and landscaped roadside margins in South Dublin County are an invaluable resource for active and passive recreational facilities, providing aesthetic enhancement and environmental improvement, thus contributing significantly to the quality of life for citizens and visitors alike.
The Council is well served by public parks and open spaces of which there are over 4,000 acres under the control of the Parks Department. This is mainly comprised of 3 large regional parks at at Tymon Park, Tallaght; Corkagh Park, Clondalkin and Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan and approximately 50 neighbourhood parks. There are also numerous public open spaces in various housing estates throughout the County.
Parks Department staff are engaged in a wide range of activities from planning and design to the development and management of parks and open spaces and advising other departments, especially the Planning Department on planning applications. Within parks, some of the facilities provided and maintained are water features, pedestrian path networks, football pitches and children’s playgrounds. Street trees, roadside margins along main roads, landscaped embankments and roundabouts are also maintained by the department.
